Audrey Werro beats Keely Hodgkinson to European 800m gold

Switzerland’s Audrey Werro won the women’s 800m at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Friday, edging Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson into second place. The result stopped Hodgkinson from completing a third consecutive continental title in the event.

Hodgkinson, the British Olympic champion, had been among the leading names in the race and finished with silver after a close final. Werro’s victory came in a contest billed as one of the meeting’s standout track events.
