China’s market regulator has ordered Tesla to recall nearly 3 million vehicles sold in the country after finding a safety problem with the cars’ hidden door handles. The move affects a large share of the company’s Chinese fleet and follows concerns that the design could make the doors harder to open in some situations.
According to the regulator, the recall covers imported Model S and Model X vehicles as well as Model 3 and Model Y cars built in China. Tesla will need to address the issue through a software update and, in some cases, hardware changes.
The recall is part of a wider safety action in China that also involves local electric vehicle makers, including XPeng, Xiaomi and Geely, the BBC reported. The companies were named in connection with separate recall measures.
Tesla has faced scrutiny in China before over vehicle safety and driver-assistance features, and the country remains one of its most important markets. The latest order adds to a series of regulatory checks on electric vehicle makers operating there.
