Fifa backs Gianni Infantino after Rabat crisis meeting
Fifa said its president will stay in post after senior officials met in Rabat, following his apologies over a plan to sell a World Cup stake without wider consultation.
Fifa said on Wednesday that Gianni Infantino will remain president after a crisis meeting of senior officials in Rabat. The governing body said he still has the backing of its leadership team after criticism over his handling of a proposed World Cup stake sale.
In a statement, Fifa said Infantino had sent written apologies to the council and to all 211 member associations. The apologies related to his failure to consult them before advancing the plan, according to the organisation.
The meeting came amid pressure on Infantino over the episode, which drew calls for him to step aside. Fifa did not announce any change in its leadership structure after the talks.
Infantino has led Fifa since 2016, and the organisation’s council and member associations remain central to its decision-making process.
