The English golfer beat Jay Leng Jr in the final at Merion and secured a place in next year’s Open Championship.
Jack Whaley of England won the US Amateur Championship on Sunday at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania after defeating American Jay Leng Jr in the final. The result also earned him entry to next year’s Open Championship.
Whaley closed out the match 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final, according to reports from BBC Sport and Sky Sports. He became only the second Englishman to lift the title since 1911.
CBS Sports reported that Whaley played through difficult weather at Merion and had his father carrying the bag during the event. The win adds the Havemeyer Trophy to his amateur record.
The US Amateur is one of the leading events in the amateur game and is staged each year by the United States Golf Association.
