Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong pleaded guilty on Wednesday to colluding with foreign powers, according to reports from the city. The case is part of Beijing’s national security crackdown and could lengthen his time in prison.
Prosecutors said Wong urged Western politicians, including Nancy Pelosi and Marco Rubio, to pressure Hong Kong by backing sanctions on the city. The charge falls under the national security law imposed in 2020.
Wong, 29, is already serving a prison sentence in a separate case. Reporters said the new conviction could bring a sentence ranging from at least three more years to life imprisonment.
Wong became widely known through the 2014 Umbrella Movement and the mass anti-Beijing protests in 2019. His latest plea adds another chapter to a series of cases brought against prominent democracy figures in Hong Kong.
