Kansas hiker dies after lightning strike on Mount Etna
A 29-year-old American man was killed while hiking on Sicily’s Mount Etna after being struck by lightning in a restricted area, firefighters said.
A 29-year-old man from Kansas died after a lightning strike on Mount Etna in Sicily, Italian firefighters said on Monday. He was hiking in a closed area of the volcano when he was hit on Sunday evening.
Rescuers reached him by helicopter after the strike, according to the fire service. He was found in serious condition on the eastern side of the mountain, above the tree line.
Medical staff later pronounced him dead at a hospital in Catania. His name was not released.
Mount Etna has been subject to access limits in some areas because of recent volcanic activity, according to local authorities.
