LIV Golf says it has new lead investor after Saudi funding exit

The breakaway golf circuit says an unnamed backer will help support its future after Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund ended funding plans.

LIV Golf said on Wednesday that it has secured a new lead investor, a move it says will help keep the breakaway circuit operating after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund stepped away from future backing. The company did not identify the investor or disclose financial terms.

According to reports from BBC Sport, Sky Sports, Al Jazeera and The Guardian, the agreement comes after the Saudi fund said in April that it would stop financing the league at the end of 2026. LIV chief executive Scott O’Neil has been working to replace that support as the tour plans for the next phase of its business.

The Guardian reported that the arrangement is intended to support LIV through 2030, although it may not stop some prominent players from leaving by the end of this year. O’Neil has also said he hopes leading names such as Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm remain with the circuit.

LIV launched in 2022 with backing from the Saudi fund and quickly became a rival to the PGA Tour by signing several top golfers. The latest deal gives the league a new financial partner as it tries to move beyond its original funding model.
