Norway impounds Russian vessel in Svalbard over Ukraine-linked asset claim

Norwegian authorities have taken control of a Russian-owned expedition vessel in Svalbard, acting on a claim connected to Ukraine’s state energy company, Naftogaz, according to reports on Thursday. The move is part of a wider campaign to recover assets linked to Russia.

The ship was detained in the Arctic archipelago after a court order authorized action in support of Naftogaz’s effort to collect on an arbitration award. That award stems from disputes over Russia’s annexation of Crimea, which Ukraine and many Western governments regard as illegal.

Naftogaz has been pursuing Russian assets in multiple countries to satisfy the award, which the company says is worth $4.2 billion. The vessel is a Russian-owned expedition cruise ship, and Norwegian officials have not publicly detailed the next steps.

Moscow has previously rejected such seizures and has described similar actions as unlawful. Svalbard, a Norwegian territory in the High Arctic, has become one of the latest locations where the broader dispute over Russian assets has played out.
