Rescuers evacuate hundreds after Nepal-Tibet flash flood leaves many missing

Rescue teams have evacuated hundreds of people from the disaster zone near the Nepal-Tibet border after a flash flood killed at least 389 people and left more than 1,300 missing, according to reports on Friday. Authorities were still searching for survivors as the river remained blocked by debris and posed a renewed flooding risk.

China’s state broadcaster CCTV said 499 local residents and 555 tourists had been transported out of the area by Friday morning. The same reports said 555 stranded tourists had been taken to safety in Tibet.

The flood has disrupted a remote border region where roads and river channels were damaged by fast-moving water and debris. Officials have continued to warn that conditions remain unstable as rescue work goes on.

The BBC published video showing the scale of the flooding, while the Guardian reported that hundreds of tourists were among those still unaccounted for. The disaster has affected communities on both sides of the high-altitude border area.
