Samsung reports sharp profit rise as AI chip demand lifts semiconductor business
Samsung said its chip division surged on demand tied to artificial intelligence, while warning memory shortages could deepen next year.
Samsung Electronics said on Thursday that its second-quarter profit jumped as global demand for AI infrastructure boosted sales of semiconductors, especially memory chips. The South Korean company also cautioned that supply tightness could worsen in 2027 as spending on AI systems keeps rising.
According to Euronews, operating profit at Samsung’s semiconductor unit climbed to more than 220 times the level seen a year earlier. The company’s overall profit increase was reported at 1,814%, reflecting the scale of the rebound in its chip business.
The results come as investors have been watching whether the AI boom can keep supporting valuations across the technology sector. Recent share-price swings in chipmakers have added to questions about how long the current surge in demand will last.
Samsung’s update adds to a broader picture of AI-related hardware makers benefiting from heavy investment in data centres and computing capacity, even as executives warn that component shortages may become more pronounced if demand continues to outpace supply.
