Scientists make chocolate bar from cocoa grown in Britain

A University of Reading student has produced a chocolate bar using ingredients grown in the UK, a project aimed at showing how warming temperatures could affect cocoa production.

A master’s student at the University of Reading has made a chocolate bar from ingredients grown in Britain, in a project linked to research on the impact of climate change on cocoa plants. The bar is described as the first of its kind made entirely with UK-grown ingredients since 1932.

The cocoa used in the bar was grown in a glasshouse, according to the university. The project was carried out to test whether cocoa can be cultivated in Britain and to draw attention to the pressures rising temperatures may place on the crop.

The Guardian reported that the last known chocolate bar made with 100% British ingredients was given to the late queen when she was six years old in 1932. That bar was produced by Rowntree’s at its headquarters in York.

The new bar adds to efforts by researchers to explore whether crops usually associated with warmer climates can be grown in the UK as weather patterns change.
