Seven killed in Kenya helicopter crash, including five Americans

A safari helicopter went down in northern Kenya, killing all seven people aboard, among them five US citizens and senior officials from Ecuador and Telemundo.

A helicopter carrying tourists crashed in northern Kenya on Wednesday morning, killing all seven people on board, according to local police and the US State Department. The dead included five Americans, Ecuador’s intelligence chief Michele Sensi-Contugi and his wife Stephany Hollihan.

Officials said the aircraft was on a safari flight in a remote area when it came down. The crash also killed a senior executive from Telemundo, the Spanish-language network owned by NBCUniversal, according to reports from the scene.

The identities of the victims were reported by the BBC and The Guardian, which cited local authorities and US officials. No cause for the crash was given in the initial reports.

Kenya’s remote northern regions are a regular destination for wildlife tourism, and aviation accidents there are typically investigated by national authorities.
