Researchers say a compound made by gut microbes may weaken the brain’s protective barrier and trigger changes tied to Alzheimer’s.

Scientists have identified a possible new pathway connecting the gut and the brain, with a bacterial metabolite appearing to damage the barrier that helps shield the brain and to encourage changes linked to Alzheimer’s disease. The findings were reported in research highlighted by Wired on August 17.

The study suggests the compound could make the brain more vulnerable by affecting the blood-brain barrier, a layer that limits what passes from the bloodstream into brain tissue. Researchers also found signs of biological changes associated with the cognitive disorder.

The work adds to a growing body of research examining how the microbiome may influence neurological disease. It does not establish that the metabolite causes Alzheimer’s, but it points to a mechanism that could help explain how gut health and brain health interact.

The report comes as scientists continue to investigate whether changes in diet, microbes or related metabolic products could play a role in age-related brain disease.
