David Crowley wins Wisconsin Democratic governor primary

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley won Wisconsin’s Democratic primary for governor on Tuesday, defeating state lawmaker Francesca Hong and moving on to the November election. Crowley could become the state’s first Black governor if he wins in the fall.

Hong, a democratic socialist who drew strong support from progressive voters, conceded after the result and later said her campaign was not focused on putting one person in office. Crowley will now face Republican Tom Tiffany, who has the backing of Donald Trump.

The race was one of the most closely watched contests on Wisconsin’s primary night because it will help determine control of the governor’s office next year. Crowley’s victory sets up a general election matchup between two candidates with sharply different political bases.

Wisconsin remains a key battleground state in national politics, and the governor’s race is expected to draw heavy attention in the months ahead.
