Diamond necklace stolen from Vienna museum after daytime break-in

Police in Vienna are investigating the theft of a diamond necklace from a museum after two men broke open a display case and took the item on Thursday. The necklace, valued at several million dollars, had been on show in the Austrian capital.

According to reports citing police, the men entered the museum with tickets, did not cover their faces and were recorded on security cameras during the theft. The object was taken from a case inside the museum before the pair left.

The necklace had once belonged to an Egyptian queen and was later sold to help settle her debts, according to the New York Times. The theft adds to a series of recent losses at museums that have drawn attention from law enforcement and cultural institutions.

Authorities have not said whether the suspects have been identified or recovered the necklace. The investigation is continuing in Vienna.
