EU gas storage falls to 13-year low before winter

Europe is entering the run-up to winter with gas storage at its weakest level for this point in the year in 13 years, according to market data cited by The Guardian. The shortfall has prompted concern in energy markets about volatility as demand rises in the colder months.

The European Union’s gas stores were 63% full in the final week of August, well below the roughly 80% average for late August in recent years. That leaves the bloc with less cushion than usual before heating demand increases.

Analysts and traders have warned that the tighter starting point could make prices more sensitive to weather changes and supply disruptions. The UK, which relies heavily on gas, may also face greater exposure to those swings, the report said.
