Officials raised the national alert level as activity increased through the day, with the eruption intensifying by nightfall, according to reporting from Al Jazeera and The Guardian. The volcano is one of the most active in Central America.
The Guardian said hundreds of people living on the slopes of Fuego left their homes after the eruption. BBC footage also showed evacuations as the ash cloud spread over the area.
Fuego has erupted repeatedly in recent years, and authorities in Guatemala regularly monitor the volcano because of the risk to nearby communities.
