London adds self-driving taxis to Uber app
Passengers in London can now book Wayve autonomous cars through Uber, although only 15 licensed vehicles are available at first.
Londoners can now request self-driving taxis through the Uber app after Wayve’s autonomous vehicles were made available on Thursday. The service is the first of its kind for hire in the capital, though the fleet is still very small.
Only 15 vehicles have been licensed so far, making an immediate match unlikely for most riders. That is far fewer than the more than 100,000 private hire vehicles operating in London.
Wayve’s cars will still have a human in the front seat who can take control if needed, according to the company. Uber said about the same number of its customers in London have signed up to try autonomous rides.
The rollout marks an early step for driverless ride-hailing in one of the world’s busiest taxi markets.
