AVROTROS said its objection is tied to the way the contest has been handled in recent years, including the role of politics around the 2026 edition. The broadcaster did not say it was ending participation permanently, but it made clear it would sit out the next contest.
Eurovision remains one of Europe’s biggest television events, though its audience fell to 131 million for the 2026 show, according to figures cited by Euronews. That was down by 35 million from the previous year after five countries boycotted the competition.
The contest is organised annually and has often been affected by disputes over participation and voting, with broadcasters and governments sometimes using it as a platform for wider political arguments.
