Anthropic adds invisible watermarking to Claude-generated text

Anthropic says new versions of Claude will embed a hidden marker in text output as it adapts to European Union rules.

Anthropic has begun adding an invisible watermark to text produced by newer versions of its Claude chatbot, according to reporting from NPR and Engadget on Aug. 15 and Aug. 17. The company says the change is meant to help identify AI-generated material and meet regulatory requirements in Europe.

The marker is embedded in content created by the model, rather than shown to users, and is intended to travel with the text as it is copied or shared. Beatrice Nolan, an AI reporter at Fortune, discussed the approach with NPR, while Engadget said Anthropic has outlined how the system works.

The move comes as AI companies face growing pressure to make synthetic content easier to trace. Anthropic has not said the watermark will be visible to readers, and the reports describe it as part of the output generated by Claude's newer models.

Claude is one of Anthropic's main consumer-facing products, and the company has been expanding its features while navigating rules on AI transparency in the European Union.
